Ubiquiti UniFi Protect UVC-G3-FLEX 1080p Indoor / Outdoor PoE Camera with Infrared

I wasn't aware on purchase that I needed to use this with a proprietary Unify server of some sort, thought it was just a standard security camera. However, fortunately it can be set up in standalone mode with a normal RTSP stream available if you log directly into the camera web interface and change the setting. The camera was easy to physically install. There's a few different mounting options included, so we had a few options for how to mount this in our garage. Image quality is good enough to recognise which neighbours cat is getting into our garage during the night.

Turns out that these cameras ship with a super out-of-date firmware, that can not properly communicate with an updated controller, but does not warn you of this; the controller can't even update the firmware, so it doesn't suggest an update, so we assumed it was up-to-date. To resolve this you need to un-adopt the camera, factory reset it, connect directly to the camera's IP address and update the camera before you adopt it again. PB Tech could possibly open the boxes and update these cameras prior to sale, or Ubiquiti would make the updated server about to update out-of-date cameras.

Now that it's all working, the field of view is a bit limited, in a double garage it doesn't make a big difference, but it would be nicer to see more of the sides of room. The night vision works better than I expected, but the range is only a couple of metres, so the back wall of the garage is outside of it's range. The spec sheets indicate both of these limitations. The G5 Flex seems to address both of these issues.

I've got this camera showing up in Apple Home with motion detection notifications. You'll need Homebridge, the Unifi Protect Plugin for Homebrdige, and Unifi Protect app running on a compatible device eg UCK-G2-Plus (Unifi Cloudkey Gen 2). If you don't want to use the Unifi Protect app, you can configure the camera to broadcast the rtsp stream and hook it up to any compatible software that takes rtsp feeds. If you've bought into the Unifi products it's a good camera but if you don't want all the other bits, maybe try another product. I have two of these cameras entirely exposed to the weather with the professional wall mount, and have been running without any issues for close to two years now. Clear, crisp image and microphone is able to hear talking from ages away. Occasionally I need to clean the lens to get off some water spots, but otherwise works flawlessly. Used in conjunction with Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus. Yet another Ubiquiti product that does what it says on the box. I'm running my controller off a cloud key gen 2 plus so had the benefit of Unifi Protect already included which made set up a breeze. The mobile app is also fantastic as are the zone filtering options for triggering alerts. I'm not sure how well this would last at a coastal property so I set mine up on a window sill inside, the only issue was the IR leds bouncing off the glass so I turned them off on the app and image at night was still good enough to see what is going on. Bought one of these as a tester for a Unifi protect system, planning to replace three cameras on a Synology system. This was the cheapest option I could test. Worked well. Unifi found it, software was initiative, managed to mount it and replace the camera at the entrance of the house, good clear field of view, detections are working well, android app works OK. Id say it was more for an indoor installation but the front door is covered so we'll see how it goes. I now have 5 of these, love them, unfortunately over the last 2 years they are much harder to come by and when in stock are much more expensive then when I first got them.

Only, looses 1 star as If mounting on the roof, I have found they don't tilt enough to see the whole room, where as other cameras I have brought can do this easily. I have now had three of these cameras and all three have failed over time. They all have been under eaves and reasonably sheltered.

The software is reasonably easy to install unless you want to use your own certificate authority. The software is ok but not great. For example, the video playback option is limited, for example no playback speed adjustment, thumbnails are small and can't changed. I can't say that I would recommend them.
