Optimized for RAID environments, keep your important data safe!

The WD Reds are part of the WD hard drive family which consists of five different colours: blue, green, purple, red and black. They all have different purposes and while they are all quite similar, they are all fine tuned to perform a particular task or be fit for a certain type of application. The WD Reds are designed for use in RAID, designed to protect your important files while still providing optimal performance. It features TLER which stands for time-limited error recovery, this is useful because most RAID controllers will drop a hard drive from the RAID array if there is no response for a couple of seconds. TLER helps prevent the RAID controller dropping the drive by aborting the recovery process if it takes more than 7 seconds which means your data transfer won't be interrupted. They also feature vibration reduction, which helps stabilize the drives when they are used together making it possible to put these in an 8 bay NAS. The speed of which these drives spin at are determined by Intellipower, which is WDs optimzed speed to power ratio for the drives, ranging from 5400 to 7200 rpm, making these drives a lot more efficient. If you are after a drive to protect your data in a small RAID environment, the WD Reds are the perfect choice.

WD 4Tb NAS HDD

16 May 2019
I was not disappointed with my recent aquisition of this NAS drive. Firstly the purchase price was very reasonable for a largish drive like this. These drives have a m.t.b.f. of 1,000,000 hours which is worth the small premium one pays for a NAS drive. To have peace of mind regarding one's precious data. The major surprise , however was the sprightly read and write times displayed on ATTO Disk Bench. I saw 180+ Mb/s read and 160+ Mb/s write times. Very impressive speeds despite the 5,400 r.p.m. spindle speed. Data transfer speed seemed so unlikely, for an H.D.D., that I ran the test several times....same result! Overall very impressed.

Good reliable drive

13 May 2019
I've had one of these drive since my last two years ago. When it came to time to replace one of my older drives it made sense to go with one I knew was reliable and had good speeds.

Rather Disappointed

10 May 2019
I bought a pair of these to use in my new Synology NAS. One of them failed after nearly 2 years and was replaced under warranty. The other drive failed after nearly 3 years, just falling into its warranty period and has gone for replacement. Considering that these are NAS specification drives I'm less than impressed at having 2 fail within 3 years.

The NAS is in a clean, vibration free environment with a steady ambient temperature so I don't think that was a factor.

I've previously had good reliability from WD drives so I can only guess that there may be a design flaw in the WD40EFRX drives. Or maybe it's just my bad luck, but it's ce...

Solid NAS solution

8 April 2019
Have two of these paired with an older Seagate, solid performance in the NAS so far, considerably cooler than the old Seagate solution, hopefully work well for the years to come.

Tried and Trusted

25 March 2019
WD drives are my goto HDD's. So far I've never had one fail during it's warranty period and only one fail in the last 10 years (the drive in one of my MyBook external drives failed after about 4 years). I'm still cautious and replace drives in my NAS server at regular intervals but the drives I've removed are still going strong years later as secondary backup copies. I'm kind of interested to see how long they will last.

Unfortunately I haven't had as much reliability from Seagate drives so I'm hesitant to try them when WD drives are only a few dollars more.

Reliable NAS Drive

7 March 2019
It is quiet, stable and does not get too hot when running a continuous 36-hour WD Extended Test.

I bought several of these HDDs in recent couple of years for QNAP 4-bay NAS Server. In general, the WD HDDs of Blue, RED and Black are all good in my experiences. However, for QNAP NAS server, I bought RED HDDs as it is designed for NAS.

However, I did have a case that a brand new WD RED 4TB was faulty. When running WD Life Guard Diagnostic Quick test there was no problem but it was detected as a faulty when running extended test. As the reason for me to purchase expensive NAS HDD is for reliability, I run a extended test on new purchased...
