Brother Home HLL-1210W Mono laser Wireless Printer

After owning many Ink Jet Printers I got totally frustrated with not being able to print a page of text because my Green Ink Cartridge was low on ink.
This little Laser Printer runs forever on a single toner cartridge and even when low on Toner , you can give it a good shake and it will print a page or two.
It prints better quality text than an inkjet and the Toner is not that more expensive than the 3 or 4 Ink Jet Cartridges.

I purchased this along with a HP 11 G8 EE Chromebook. I wasn't aware that it was not natively supported on ChromeOS.
It was initially printing garbage or blank pages with several drivers I tried.
While not supported on Chrome, I got it working. Choose the HL-2170W driver.
It was printing with odd artifacts. Of the 23 fonts standard in Google Docs, 13 had corrupted descenders.
Fonts that seem to work OK are Caveat, Comfort, Garamond, Georgia, Nunito, Oswald, Roboto Serif, Spectral, Times New Roman and Verdana.
That's all I need until I get a Linux machine.

Good value for money and ideal for low volume monochrome printing.
Relatively fast warmup time, effective power saving when idle. Easy to clear the occasional paper jam and to replace consumables.
Ideal for a student or home user. Just choose your font carefully.
Use decent paper, not the cheapest available.
Cheap paper can come with excess paper dust which will degrade print quality due to toner contamination. But that applies to all laser printers.

Excellent service from PB Tech - very quick notification that printer was ready to collect. Extremely easy to set up on Ubuntu 22.04 when using a USB cable (which is not in the box).
On Ubuntu 22.04 you go to Settings, Printers, and follow the prompts & accept the suggested driver Brother '1200 series'. It will then offer to print a test page. The test print looked fine as did a pdf document I printed as a test. This would be one of the most effortless printer setups I've ever done! I haven't tried it with my Windows laptop yet. So easy to set up. When it ran out of paper there were no instructions in the manual on how to make it start printing again when paper was refilled... turns out you need to open and shut the lid. Simple but undocumented!!! We'll see how well the small toner cartridge lasts. So easy to set up. Works great, didn't come with a USB cable so I connected it to the network via WPS which worked a charm.

Love my printer. It is exactly what I wanted. Just one issue. It was advertised as being wireless and could be 'set up' as wireless according to instructions. The instructions also stated that it was preferable to use a cable . I didn't have one. I was fortunate that I had a neighbour that had a brother cable otherwise I would have needed to purchase one to set up the printer as the wireless set up did not work for me. Great value printer for the price. Works perfectly on Ubuntu Linux 20.04, using standard drivers available from Ubuntu. Just plugged the usb cable (not supplied) in... selected the driver and it works. Great value printer for the price.
