Hey guys. Just purchased this. Intending on posting a better review after spending more time with the machine. Just letting everyone know this system does NOT support Load Reduced DIMM. It only supports DDR4 ECC RDIMM or ECC/non-ECC UDIMM. LRDimm has the same physical bus connector and same voltage but is not compatible with this system. I ordered the wrong Dimm (LRDimm) by mistake and had to get an RA and pay a restocking fee because of my error. Hope this can save you the same problem :) Hey guys. Just purchased this. The diminutive Supermicro E300-8D with its low power quad core Intel Xeon CPU, 128GB memory capacity, and ample network connectivity is an excellent platform to build a home lab on for just about anything, ie many use it for learning about VMware products. That said, it's also a great little platform for small business or branch office use - just add a NAS for more storage capacity if the M.2 and single 2.5" drive isn't sufficient*. With a rackmount kit, it will easily fit in a communications rack, no large server rack required.

Power consumption is low thus heat generation is also low. Power consumption is low thus heat generation is also low. The two 40x40mm high speed fans can get loud under load, you can adjust the fans to a point where they don't spin up as often. Regardless, I suggest hiding it away in a well ventilated closet.

*There is an option for a M.2 riser card to add more M.2 drives.

PBTech was showing in the google search results ... the site has stock and fast shipping so I was keen. I had issues with the site at first, the price doesnt show because they want you to run the configure tool which doesnt work for AU people, so i mailed and got onto Nick who sorted it out. We went back and forth a couple of time, and the box was on its way. I unpacked it that night and got to work on it, everything was new and worked fine. So the result is very good, the Supermicro E300-8D is a lot more performant than any of the netgate whiteboxes for the same money and it has IPMI which is nice. so yeah a good purchase and good experience. I would hit them up again for a Supermicro in future as well.
