Seamless integration with the Unifi system, 4x PoE (802.11af), managed 8x 1GB non-blocking performance
Look, if you're just after a no-fuss Gigabit switch with PoE for a WiFi AP and maybe an IP camera or 3 then a $120 TP-Link will do you just fine - but - if you want to replace that insecure and low performance (even on business plans) all-in-1 router/WiFi/Switch you got for "free" with your new UFB plan, then do yourself a favour and pay the ~$600 to get into the Unifi system with this switch, USG ($210) and any of their WiFi APs ($170+). It sounds a lot but you'll have years of secure and high performance Internet without wondering why Netflix is buffering on your smart TV or video quality pans on Skype/FaceTime etc.
If you already have UniFi devices then this is a no-brainer, why are you even bothering to read this ;-)
I have one of these at home and another at work and they work flawlessly with UniFi APs using PoE, it really is plug-adopt-play. Through the controller UI you can see exactly which port a device is plugged into and what its speed and power draw are and even restart a PoE device by cycling the power (in case it's not responding to the controller UI for some reason) and all this can be done remotely if you use a cloud account.
It does use 802.3af for PoE, this is a standard so as long as the AP you buy conforms to this standard then there's nothing more you need to do. If your AP uses passive PoE then you'll need to hook up the PoE adaptor that came with it between the switch and AP - I don't know of any switch that supplies passive PoE output on its own.
If all you need PoE for is an AP with passive PoE then you could save $30 getting the other 8-port UniFi switch with passive PoE passthrough but you'll probably buy something with 802.3af at some point down the track.
Hi, I am reviewing this as part of an overall solution that I put together using this USG Router to connect me to my Spark Fibre directly, then the UniFi Switch US-8-60W and the UniFi UAP-AC-LR Dual Band WiFI Access Point.
The switch is very cool and I used it to power the Access Point even though the AP came with it's on PoE, I wanted a tidy install and needed a gigabit switch, so for the little extra it was a no brainer, works seamlessly with the controlling software and like the USG, it is incredibly well built and with a metal chassis and casing!

Through the UniFi controller software which you download for free and run on your computer is what makes it all so clever and easy to manage and see what is going on - forget the MESH products if you have ethernet throughout your house or even Meshing the Access Points I would rather do and have business grade equipment for high end home price point!
solved my issue with TP Link managed switch dropping packets. Cunning strategy in separating the controller software from the hardware - if you want additional features you're prompted to buy the gateway hardware! I do wish they would fix the spanning tree problem - it was reported fixed in earlier firmware/forums, but like Freddy Kruger.....the problem has come back. The switch is working well with STP disabled, but still left wondering if STP could improve forwarding throughout or not. solved my issue with TP Link managed switch dropping packets. Easy setup and adopt to my CloudKey controller. From the four PoE ports I have two Unifi APs (AC-LITE / IW), CloudKey and Flex Mini powered. This device does run very warm compared to other switches I have used previously so reasonable ventilation needs to be considered. Easy setup and adopt to my CloudKey controller. Replaced my "dumb" PoE switch with this Unifi Switch SW-8-60W. I am using it to power my Unifi Access Points and the Unifi Cloud Key/Controller.
As the Unifi controller now manages this switch, I was now able to upgrade to and configure new VLANs to separate my IoT devices from the rest of my network and provide a Guest wifi network.

I have two of these. They allow me great flexibility and reliability managing my home network. Could easily manage the needs of a small-medium business when properly configured. I have two of these. Bought this switch to power my unifi AP's. Works a treat! Fit straight into my unifi ecosystem and the network maps on the controller updated accordingly showing me all the LAN devices and AP's attached to the switch. Works perfectly, You can always trust the Unify gear to work as advertised Works perfectly, You can always trust the Unify gear to work as advertised
Good product but more expensive in compare to other stores. It works perfectly with the rest of the devices in its ecosystem. Good product but more expensive in compare to other stores. It works perfectly with the rest of the devices in its ecosystem.
This product is not the usual end consumer, is a bit more advanced geared towards semi-professional use, has heap of features and offers good monitoring and introspection, tuning, filtering etc. This product is not the usual end consumer, is a bit more advanced geared towards semi-professional use, has heap of features and offers good monitoring and introspection, tuning, filtering etc.
I have two of these devices and have had no issue. It is a powerful device. It can also power your access points without the need to have separate power sources.
