Academy - 1/72 - USMC F-35B VMFA-121 Green Knights
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a single-seat, single-engine multi-role fighter built by Lockheed Martin as a fifth-generation machine to meet the needs of the US Air Force (USAF), US Navy, US Army, and US Marine Corps. Initially called the X-35 JSF, the aircraft was renamed the F-35 Lightning II in 2006. While the primary recipient of the F-35 will be the US government, the project is co-financed by other countries, particularly Great Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands. The main contractors for the F-35 program include Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and BAE Systems.
The main goal behind the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program was to create a versatile aircraft that could serve all branches of the military. This would allow for far-reaching standardization of spare parts, significantly reducing costs. The F-35 program includes three distinct versions: F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C, which share more than three-quarters of the same components. These versions are designed to handle a variety of tasks, including attacking land targets, air combat, battlefield missions, and electronic warfare.
Designed primarily for low-intensity conflicts, the F-35 differs from its larger "relative," the F-22. Despite this, the F-35 is still one of the most advanced multi-role aircraft in the world, thanks to its Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, modern avionics, and Stealth capabilities. Its versatility and advanced technology make it an important asset for modern military operations.
The first serial production F-35 was completed in February 2006, and by 2013, a total of 63 aircraft had been built. This makes the F-35 a cornerstone of modern air combat and a key player in international defense strategies.
