This is a two-piece modular plug. You need to make sure you get the triangular wedge the right way up/down and it isn't super obvious which way that should be. Also, the plug release tab is initially very 'flat' so doesn't secure the modular plug into a socket at all, not until you start bending that tab back for MAKE it sit up and lock in. I have struggled so much trying to connect JR-45s and failed that I was about to give up. But a bit more exploring and I found these 2-piece jobs.
