Afterpay may conduct a soft credit check for new customers when they first sign-up to use the platform. This soft credit check will not impact a customer’s credit score.
Soft credit checks (also known as soft pulls or soft inquiries) are very common and will not affect credit scores, will not be visible to other lenders or creditors and may or may not be recorded in credit reports, depending on the credit bureau.

There are a few different reasons as to why your order could be declined.
- You are a new customer of Afterpay: If you have had your account for less than 6 weeks, we may limit you to a smaller number of purchases. Our restrictions are tighter when you first get started. This is to ensure that we are upholding our commitment to responsible spending.
- You accidentally missed a payment: Afterpay is passionate about ensuring that our customers use our service responsibly. If you have had recent late payments, this can impact your ability to shop with us.
- Check your card: Your card is super important! There are a few things that you can double check if your order is being declined. See if it has expired or has enough funds.
You’ll receive text and email reminders before every payment is due. You’ll also receive alerts for missed payments, so it’s totally clear what’s coming out of your account and when.
