Features
In 1954, under the leadership of Dipl. Ing. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, Mercedes-Benz developed a new racing sports car for the 1955 season. This open car designated 300 SLR relied on the technology of the current Formula I racing car. In 1955 Uhlenhaut, Head of the Test Dept at Mercedes-Benz, redesigned the 300 SLR giving it coupé bodywork with gull-wing doors. The car also had Formula I technology. Thus its 8-cylinders in-line engine generated all of 300 bhp. In the 1950s the 300 SLR Coupé, only two examples of which were built, had a top speed of 290 km/h, making it the fastest car licensed for the road.
