Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 G95NC 57" Dual UHD Ultrawide Quantum Mini-LED Gaming Monitor

I'd been looking into this monitor since before it was released, it had all the features I'd wanted in a monitor while allowing me to go from a three monitor setup to a single monitor, what more could I want?

The Pros:
- The resolution of the monitor is crisp
- The refresh rate is high enough that screen tearing is a thing of the past
- Being a 1000R curvature means that it's not actually as wide as you'd expect. the size of the monitor worried me at first but it fit really well on my corner desk.

- As big as it is, they made it fairly easy to put together for a single person, I had no troubles installing the monitor legs and putting it on the desk by myself.

The Cons:
- The Price, seriously, this is an expensive monitor.
- The fact no currently released Graphics Card on the market can actually support this monitor to it's full capabilities. The Nvidia RTX4090 can only do 120hz refresh at this resolution due to it not supporting the higher Display Port and HDMI standards, and while the AMD Radeon 7900xtx does support the newer ports, just can't handle the resolution at that frame rate. No matter what anyone says, current gen cards can't use the full capabilities of this monitor.
- I had an issue with GSync on my Nvidia card trying to run this monitor, while this doesn't say it natively supports Gsync, your card will still try to use it. If Gsync is in use this caused my screen to constantly flash after it had been off for a while until I rebooted the pc, it took a while to work out the reason but after disabling Gsync I never had this problem again.
- This Monitor gets HOT if you're constantly running HDR, so be warned.
- In a Dark environment, you get a lot of bloom, it's a common problem with these kind of panels, and Samsung try their best by having 2,392 local dimming zones, but in a dark scene with some white text, you get a lot of light bleed, more then you'd expect for a monitor at this price.
- Windows support for setting up zones on the monitor sucks, this was easily fixed by using Microsoft PowerToys software which allows you to create multiple regions where you can assign windows to.

Conclusion:
This monitor replaced three of my monitors, and with Microsoft PowerToys it really made things a lot nicer to deal with all that monitor space.

I've been using this monitor for about a month now and overall I think I'd give this monitor about an 8/10, it gets a point deducted for price, half a point lost for how hot it gets and another half a point for the light bleed. I would deduct points for the monitor flashing when my card was trying to use Gsync, but that's more an issue with my card then the monitor itself as they never advertised support for Gsync.

I do not recommend paying the listing price for this monitor by any means, that seems more then a bit extreme, but New Zealand pricing on tech has always been extortionate. I picked this monitor up during the Black Friday sales for 25% off the list price which made it slightly easier to justify since I'd been looking at getting one for a while. If you want a top of the line monitor that's future proof, then this is as good as you can get. Samsung have a history of releasing an LED version a few years later though and if Light Bleed annoys you then it might be worth waiting for that instead.

After doing a bit of anecdotal reading, I came to the conclusion that purchasing through PBTech was going to be my safest option since PB's customer service is bound to be much more reliable than Samsung's should anything go wrong.

Needless to say, I have had absolutely no issues so far. My main suggestion would be to immediately turn the brightness down, otherwise it feels like you're sitting in front of a space heater (this thing gets hot with anything above 25 brightness). Also, since transitioning away from the Ark and using this monitor instead, we've noticed a $14-a-week drop in the power bill ($56 a month is absolutely absurd).

In terms of productivity, compared to the 55" Ark, I've managed to lay out my applications in a way that I've effectively doubled my real estate. While I've lost a fair amount of verticality compared to the Ark, text is a lot more crisp and pleasant to look at. I don't need to be able to see one-million rows of Excel at one time, so I'm not too hung up on losing that benefit.

For gaming, I've found myself running most games in Windowed Borderless as I'm not currently using a second monitor and I prefer being able to see things like Discord or even just a web browser while I play. Centering the game window doesn't really work that well as the amount of space on the edges becomes quite limited; however, a two-third split seems to be the sweet spot for me personally. Borderless Gaming works wonders for this setup.

In terms of PC specs, I'm using this monitor just fine with a 4070ti. To be able to get the full functionality of the monitor in terms of refresh rates plus frame rates while gaming, the most common recommendation is to wait for the GTX 5000 series. I convinced myself that purchasing the monitor BEFORE the graphics card only ensures that I've future-proofed my display setup as opposed to trying to fork out the money for both a GPU and monitor at the same time. Plus, AI-based Super Resolution tools are great for retaining play-ability. I can't speak for you, but I know that I'll hardly ever notice the difference between 144 Hz gameplay and 240 Hz gameplay, especially in the heat of the moment.

I was on the fence for the longest time, but the above is what helped me decide to make the purchase, and I'm glad I did.

P.S. I've been using the Brateck LDT80-C012 desk mount (PB Tech stocks this) for two weeks now and there has been absolutely no sag at all and the monitor feels stable and safe. Keep in mind that I do not move my monitor at all once I have it in place, so I can't speak much about how it handles frequent repositioning, but as a static mount it has saved me valuable desk space.

I wouldn't recommend this monitor. The specs are awesome, but there are a myriad of issues that you can Google online - ranging from not actually on until power-cycling, through to randomly entering diagnostic mode, through to actual popping noises coming from overheating components in the monitor (Google 'HDR popping, neo G9').

For this amount of money, you'd expect top quality. When it's working, this monitor is epic - but too many frequent issues for this to be a good purchase. I wouldn't recommend this monitor.
