Turns out I bought the wrong thing. I needed the USB 3 connector.

Plugged it into a mac and an older TV and it didn't work (because of the TV) so ultimately i couldn't use it.

Can't say I agree with other comments. The adapter I purchased fails to wake up the monitor on both a surface dock and Macbook. The genuine MS and Apple ones work fine.
