Seagate BarraCuda 8TB 3.5" Internal HDD

This is an SMR drive so the write performance is a lot less than you would expect. Appallingly bad in a NAS setup - I wish I'd known before buying two of them.

As another buyer reviewed this is a SMR drive, which is slightly cheaper than a CMR drive. HD manufacturers are somewhat reluctant to draw attention to the fact that some of their drives are SMR. The cost for the cheaper price is that the drive is slower to write.

As the drive fills up with data it gets slower. More full more slow. At approx 90% full this really become noticeable to the point where it is best to consider this a 7TB HDD (vs 8TB), which makes the 8TB Iron Wolf (CMR) cousin look somewhat better price wise.

In short there are drives more suited to being filled to capacity or placed in a NAS. After that is why Seagate, and others make different models.

Interestingly enough I bought a 4TB BarraCuda and it does not exhibit the same issue. Both are SMR HD.

With only 4 slots suitable for standard size drives, I've swapped out a 2TB drive for this one, resulting in a massive increase in space available (i.e. a net extra 6TB), plus I can use the now spare HDD for one of my Proxmox servers.

So whilst not perfect as a drive, with the SMR and the slower RPM (5400 vs 7200 for smaller drives), this works perfectly for what I want to use it for at a good price. It will definitely get the job done, however it's an extremely loud and slow drive when reading and writing. As it gets fuller it gets slower. There are definitely better drives out there, but this one gets the job done if you don't mind the speed and noise. Speeds are alright, it has a large amount of space, and it's cheap.

Cons: Can be VERY loud and is sometimes rather slow compared to a more expensive drive.

Video files can be bulky and the work flow here needs to meet that. The apps I count on include some that are ancient Win7 miracles and these dont do that well on current OS systems. For these, and other reasons such as not having the studio PCs networked, the robust work speed and convenient size of the units, the 8TB SATA3 Internal HDD BarraCuda are part of the answer for me. At least one in each main PC. Rare issues with a drive are always my incompetence but like to think am improving - and thankfully no major data damage to date. Drive was installed 2021 in a well cooled, dust free quality enclosure powered by a top of the line evga powersupply. Don't bother with these high failure rate drives. What a waste of money and time.
