The WD Reds are part of the WD hard drive family which consists of five different colours: blue, green, purple, red and black. They all have different purposes and while they are all quite similar, they are all fine tuned to perform a particular task or be fit for a certain type of application. The WD Reds are designed for use in RAID, designed to protect your important files while still providing optimal performance. It features TLER which stands for time-limited error recovery, this is useful because most RAID controllers will drop a hard drive from the RAID array if there is no response for a couple of seconds. TLER helps prevent the RAID controller dropping the drive by aborting the recovery process if it takes more than 7 seconds which means your data transfer won't be interrupted. They also feature vibration reduction, which helps stabilize the drives when they are used together making it possible to put these in an 8 bay NAS. The speed of which these drives spin at are determined by Intellipower, which is WDs optimzed speed to power ratio for the drives, ranging from 5400 to 7200 rpm, making these drives a lot more efficient.
