Sennheiser HD 400S Wired Over-Ear Headphones - Black

I have these now for about 2 weeks and I am very happy. This was a replacement for another pair of Sennheisers, some HD300 where the headband snapped - so much about Sennheiser being robust.

These are straightforward wired headphones, no Bluetooth or noise canceling. You pay for sound, no features or gimmicks.

I use the HD400s mainly for music, some movies, and a little gaming and they are suitable for all of this.

Sound is very nice on the Focusrite 2i2 Gen 3 audio interface that I generally use them with. The 2i2 has a very nice DAC but the amp is not very powerful. The HD400s also performs very well on my phone or a FiiO M6 DAP.

The HD400s feel more robust compared to the HD300 and the sound is better over the entire spectrum. Punchy bass, beautiful mids, and crisp treble. Compared to the HD300 I can hear more details in music, the bass is deeper and there is more soundstage. The HD400s sound on par with a set of Sony headphones that cost me 5 times more.

Comfort I would say is similar to the HD300, these are light and can be worn for hours.

Happy to give them 5 stars in their price bracket.

The sound balance in these headphones are amazing for monitoring music, and for casual usage. I do have to warn that if you are looking for headphones with very heavy bass or heavy treble, it is best to look somewhere else. These headphones are good at producing both ends of the frequency, but not perfect at either. The removable and replaceable cable is durable, however the placement of the mic and media control is a bit awkward (Up near the right speaker). But what it doesn't tell you is that you're gonna need a binder clip or a peg for this product to be used properly.
Why, you ask?

Because there's a stupid little button that needs to be pressed in order to hear boosted volume. It's the worst designed audio product I've ever encountered.
Get a small clothes peg, clamp the button so it's on all the time = boosted volume with bass.
No peg = muted volume, no bass, crackly distortion. These headphones look great on the website. No power requirement or continuous charging.

I purchased these headphones at the beginning of this year to use for full-time tertiary study with a significant online component.
On the positive side - the sound is great, and my fellow students appear to be able to hear me fine when we're in Zoom tutorials so the mic is good too.
On the downside - these are advertised as over-ear headphones, which I wanted for comforts sake as they were going to be used for extended periods, but they aren't. The cavity in the ear-cups on these headphones is only 3.5cm wide so the pads unavoidably sit ON-ear - and I have small ears. I purchased the headphones for my husband as a birthday present recommended by my son who did some investigating for me. The sound quality is excellent as you can expect from Sennheisers, but the ear cups are very small. Definitely not an over ear headset, they sit on your ears actually. Not that its uncomfortable, i just prefer over ears for longer sessions of listening as your ears start to get a little bit sore after a few hours. Sennheiser seem to be getting back into the collapsible headphone market again. Add noise cancelling to it's capabilities and it'd be perfect.

The audio quality is solid at this price point. Decent bass, without being exaggerated. The mids are slightly weak but nothing deal breaking.
