Because the Xbox Series X controllers out of the box still come with AA batteries that don't explicitly say are rechargeable. The play and charge kit is a necessity for owners of the new Xbox. You no longer have to deal with worrying about low controller battery. Because this product is also offically licensed, you can trust that this device has been tested thoroughly with the new Xbox controllers. The USB-C cable is also very long too and you can play and charge at the same time. It's a shame that Microsoft doesn't ship these WITH the Xbox console itself. If you've had one of these you know the deal with the battery. It's decent and reliable for a good couple of years which is good for the price point. I am also using the cable to charge switch accessories and it works well for that too.
