Seagate Expansion 5TB Portable External HDD - Black

I have purchased 15 or more Seagate external drives over the years. Never a failure. Western Digital 2 out of 3 failures. So yes, I am a Seagate fan - and highly recommend. Just the ticket for archiving files, putting one copy in a desk drawer and another offsite. Not as fast as the larger units with external power supplies, so more suited for archiving offline files than performing routine backups.

Not having to have a separate power supply is convenient for archives where files get written once then accessed at random as speed is not an issue. The desktop version with external power supply is more suited for daily/weekly backups and system recovery restores where sustained performance is required (fast read/write with good heat dissipation). Although, unable to have this external hard drive plugged in at all times, as when turning off my computer and trying to turn it back on - it will NOT work if the Seagate external hard drive is plugged in. Which means having to unplug, replug, unplug, replug and repeat of this nature. Slightly worrying considering this can cause corrupt data when continuously having to remove and insert, remove and insert constantly. Currently in communication to see if this is a natural occurance, or whether I have a faulty product. Storage space is awesome, price not too bad.

As my music is ever growing with lossless audio and now 24 bit High Res audio, my need to get a bigger hard drive was becoming desperate. As always I keep an eye out on price spy for any sale prices. I was happy to see that PB Tech (once again) was having a sale and was cheapest by a country mile. I also like the fact that when I rang the Petone branch they helpfully informed me that even though they were out of stock, I could still make a purchase before the sale ended and pick them up from the store when they had more stock after the sale had ended. Now that is cool! Really cool!

I have always used Seagate HDs as they are durable and easy to use. Mind you I did reformat the drive from exFat to NFTS as the latter has a faster read speed. If I were to use another it would be western digital. Mind you I will have to eventually upgrade to a higher size and 5TB is the highest in the portable Expansion range, so a plug in desktop hard drive it will have to be! In my opinion that would be the only con on these drives that it only goes to 5TB and sometimes they get over heated (like any hard drive) when used for long periods of time. A cool hack I came up with is use a small desk fan to cool it down or leave on a window ledge during winter. I have used Seagate Hard Drives for over 10 years.

The online purchase was secure as I got a authorization code SMS from my bank which was an extra piece of mind for novice online shoppers such as myself. Since it was click and collect I nominated the Petone Branch. I was warmly greeted by the security guard at the entrance which was a nice touch to the overall shopping experience at PB Tech.
